Welcome to ZapZone! The most exciting hour of every child’s week!
SO… WHAT DO WE DO?
ZapZone is the kids church ministry of The Fellowship. We teach and apply the Word of God in creative, age-appropriate ways, and lead children to know and love Jesus with all their hearts.
Kids stay in worship with their parents/guardians (we value families worshiping together) and then leave just as the sermon is about to start.
AGES 3-6 years:
(We need: Teachers and Assistants)
We prefer to keep our littlies in classrooms with no more than 25 children, as they need to feel safe and noticed by the teacher. We start with “how was your week chat”, play a little game on the carpet, and maybe sing a song or two.
Then the Teacher tells the Bible story in a fun and interactive way, and apply it to our lives in a way that littlies can relate to. We have a curriculum with a very good lesson outline to help the Teacher prepare the story and application well.
We do a craft together, with the Assistants helping our kids cut, paste, paint or colour in. Our 3-6 years department head normally prepares the craft necessities beforehand, but might ask either the Teacher or the Assistant at times to help with it. The craft is also from our curriculum material, but should the Teacher or Assistant want to prepare a different craft, they are always welcome to do so.
Towards the end we enjoy some free play outside in the preschool playground, should the weather allow for it. Our Teacher and Assistants keep an eye out to make sure the fun is safe and happy.
We will soon split this age group into two classrooms – ages 3-4 years and ages 5-6 years – to enable us to teach more age appropriately to both groups.
AGES 7-9 years:
(We need: Teachers, Shepherds, Games and Crafts leaders)
From age 7 years we teach our children in a big group setting, and then discuss the lesson in small groups (we call them Shepherding groups).
We kick off with an ice-breaker game, which may or may not apply to the day’s lesson.
The Teacher then works with the entire group, having prepared the lesson from our curriculum material, which offers creative ways to apply God’s Word to this energetic age group.
After the lesson, our children split up into Shepherding groups with around eight to ten children in a group. The small group Shepherd will have some discussion points from our curriculum, with which to lead the children into understanding how to apply God’s Truth to their lives. This is also where our kids ask questions, learn to share testimonies, pray for one another, and pray for friends and family outside the group.
Towards the end, we have some organised or free play, or make a craft together.
AGES 10-13 years:
We start the engines with an ice-breaker game, with the entire group, or with someone from the “audience”.
The Teacher then works with the entire group. Our curriculum gives two options to the approach for each lesson. This gives the Teacher more scope to apply the lesson to where the group is at.
After the lesson, our children split up into Shepherding groups with around eight to ten children in a group – boys and girls in separate groups. Our curriculum offers the small group Shepherd some discussion points to help lead the children into understanding how to apply the lesson to their lives. In this group our kids ask questions, learn to share testimonies, pray for one another, and pray for their friends and family.
Towards the end, we either have some organised or free play, or make a craft together.
HOW DOES THE VOLUNTEER ROSTER WORK?
You can expect to be on duty once a month, for one service. Should you be available to do more, we will gladly roster you in.
We will try and team you up with the same volunteers every time you serve, so that you can get to know your team well.
SIGN ME UP!
CAN I CHOOSE MY ROLE?
We would love to place you in a role that you will enjoy. So please tell us what age group you feel most comfortable with, as well as whether you will enjoy teaching, assisting, planning and running games, or preparing crafts.
WHAT ABOUT TRAINING?
All our volunteers will attend a training day, which will run twice a year on a Saturday. This is a fun and interactive day, where you will learn how to love children the way Jesus did, and work with children in an age-appropriate way. You will also get to know the ZapZone steering team and get to hear our heart for the children in our community.
Our aim is that, at the end of this training day, you will step into your volunteer role with great confidence.
CHECK IT OUT!
Feel free to arrange a visit with us on a Sunday to see what we get up to!
